The Benefits of Turmeric



Turmeric is a great source of many health benefits. It is historically found in Southern India. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial spice plant. It has a taste that can be described as mixed peppery in flavor and light scented similar to that of a mixed scent of orange and ginger.  

General Uses:

Turmeric’s color can range between a light yellow to a dark orange and is commonly used in curry dishes.  Although turmeric resembles ginger in appearance, it has many more uses and contain a plethora of additional health benefits over that offered by ginger. Turmeric has been known for its anti-inflammatory benefits which has been scientifically validated extensively.  Despite this however, this plant is mainly ignored in western medicine.

Chemical and Nutritional Value:

The main chemical compound found in turmeric curcumin.  In vitro and animal studies have shown that curcumin has anti-tumor properties.  Turmeric is a very rich source of many important B vitamins and contains very good levels of vitamin C.  It also contains a relatively high amount of other important minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, copper, zinc and manganese. 

Uses in Beauty Treatments:

Turmeric has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and is therefore, very beneficial in skincare recipes.  Turmeric is also an anti-oxidant and as such, assists in attacking free radicals which gives a youthful glow to the skin.  Curcumin, contained in turmeric, also helps brighten the skin.

Against Skin problems:

Turmeric, when mixed with coconut oil, honey or lemon or juice to form a paste, makes and excellent facial that produces so many wonderful benefits.  After making a paste with one of the aforementioned ingredients, apply to the face and neck area and leave on for twenty minutes before washing your face with warm water.  The benefits are numerous and includes reduction in fine lines, under eye dark circles, effective as an acne treatment and other skin disorders.


Turmeric is not only used in beauty treatments but also used as a health supplement. Turmeric is thought of as “Holy powder” in India, where it has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurveda medicine. 

Examples of turmeric in medicine and treatment fields in India:
  1. Turmeric fills up the burns and cuts like other antiseptics;
  2. Turmeric can reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer which can be enhanced when mixed with cauliflower;
  3. Turmeric reduces liver toxicity and considered a natural liver detoxifier;
  4. Turmeric is a known pain reliever;
  5. Turmeric works against inflammation in both arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis;
  6. Turmeric increases the brain’s kinetic energy. This is good for students.
  7. Wound healing can be sped up with this spice.
  8. In China, people use this as medicine to cure depression.
  9. Turmeric increases the dimension of digestion.
  10. Turmeric purifies the bloodstream.
  11. Recent studies show that turmeric slows the progression of Alzheimers;
  12. Turmeric reduces the risk of childhood leukemia and helps prevent metastases from occurring.
